There are a lot of great things about Austin! One is that there are so many gluten-free and healthy food options. It makes Austin a great vacation spot for those with Celiac. Here are 9 delicious gluten-free places to eat in Austin, Texas.
P Terry’s – Burgers
This classic burger stand is locally owned and opened in 2005. They have expanded locations throughout the Austin areas through San Antonio. Some locations are the classic drive thru only and some have indoor seating. P Terry’s serves burgers and fries – pretty simple yet pretty great. They use fresh ingredients and have a separate fryer used for their French fries – made from 100% Burbank Idaho potatoes! Although they do not offer gluten-free buns, you can order your burger as a lettuce rap. They offer a veggie burger and grilled chicken as a lettuce wrap as well. They have a nutrition menu listed online with allergens called out which is very helpful.
Maudie’s – Tex-Mex
This locally owned restaurant has been around for decades. They have several locations throughout Austin. Maudie’s menu lists items that are gluten free or gluten free upon request, as well as vegetarian. When ordering online, you have the option to select free gluten-free chips with salsa. When eating at the restaurant, let your server know about your gluten allergy and they will bring your chips prepackaged. My favorite menu item are the Josie’s Enchiladas (without onions). It’s great!!
Via 313 – Pizza
This pizza tastes like heaven! As someone with Celiac, most gluten free pizzas I’ve tried are thin, flat, and taste like cardboard. Via 313 pizza is none of those things. Owned by two brothers from Detroit, their pizza is thick Detroit style pizza. The menu also offers gluten-free cheese sticks and gluten free desert cinnamon sticks – all delicious! Via 313 opened in 2011 as a food truck on East 6th Street and now has expanded to multiple locations.
The Clay Pit – Indian Cuisine
This restaurant is located in downtown Austin and holds a history stemming from the 1850’s. The Clay Pit offers Contemporary Indian Cuisine with gluten-free and vegan options listed on their menu. Be sure to let your server know of any food allergies. It has a great atmosphere and if you’re into spooky stories, be sure to click here to my Haunted Austin blog post to learn about The Clay Pit’s haunted history.
ChinaTown – Chinese
ChinaTown has been an Austin staple since 1983 and has 2 locations. I love this place because it’s the first time in years that I’ve been able to eat Sweet and Sour Chicken. I had to ask my server if they offered it gluten-free and they said they would make the chicken stir fry. They also offered gluten free soy sauce if you ask.
Picnik – Comfort Food
Like most new good restaurants in Austin, Picnik started out as a food trailer and now has 2 restaurant locations – one of Burnet and one on South 1st Street. Their menu is not only gluten-free but refine-sugar free and peanut free! It ranges from Avocado Toast to Tacos, Sandwiches, Bowls, Chicken Fried Chicken and more. They also offer brunch on the weekends and have a drink menu consisting of bone broth, coffee, tea, and cocktails.
Wilder Wood Restaurant – American
Everything here is gluten-free. It’s been open about 18 years and serves brunch, lunch, dinner, and happy hour. They have a great outdoor patio. We started with the fried calamari/French fry appetizer, then had the chicken fried steak that came with a baked potato, green beans and garlic toast. We tried a slice of their carrot cake and chocolate cake. Everything was great! They also offer gluten-free breakfast/brunch. Click here to read about gluten-free breakfast in Austin.
Rudy’s Country Store – BBQ
Rudy’s was founded in the hill country outside of San Antonio, Texas and now has locations throughout Texas and the south. Rudy’s is a fun family style BBQ joint. You can eat inside at one of the many picknick tables or order to go. They sell their own BBQ sauce. Try their regular sauce or their Sissy Sauce (a little less spicy). I prefer their regular sauce. Their online Allergy Guide lets you know which items are gluten free. Most of their BBQ is gluten-free, with the exception of their pulled pork. Check the guide to confirm if your favorite item is gluten-free. Rudy’s employees will always give you lots of free bread with each order. Just let them know you don’t want any. You can request corn tortillas instead for a small fee. Another fun thing the employees do, is ring the bell and cheer if it’s your first time there 😊 If you purchase a drink, keep your cup! You can bring it back and only pay 99 cents for a refill.
Mighty Find Burger has been opened since 2007 and serves made to order burgers, fries, and shakes. They offer gluten-free buns for burgers and have a gluten-free option for their crinkle cut fries. A fun thing to do is sign up for their license plate program. Order and use their license plate and get $150 of burger bucks!
